Not another education white paper. A demolition of the test.

In The End of School, Ricardo Semler, the business maverick behind Brazil's Semco experiment and the democratic Lumiar schools, turns his attention to how children actually learn. His charge: we built schools to grow curious minds and then engineered them to do the opposite. The standardized test, what he calls the CAT, killed curiosity. Parkerism, one “expert” palate imposed on everyone, did the rest.

His answer is Relevance-Based Learning. Children learn through what genuinely fascinates them, while a software platform, built over eleven years, maps every project back to the required items in math, history and science. For the first time, a new method doesn't conflict with the national curriculum. It delivers it, even as subjects evolve and some go obsolete.

The book lays out the whole system: the Six Tenets, the Tree of Knowledge, UnTethered Schools that rethink both the space and the way we learn, the All-Q toolkit, and Maya's journey up the tree from one small question to a full education. It's the engine behind NovaLumi, the international school network Semler founded, and it's offered free and open-source to states, NGOs and refugee camps.

This is not a frustrated entrepreneur's hunch. It's 35 years of study, practice and work with educators, grounded in research (the sources are all in the appendix). And it ends where good learning always does, at the edge of the map: the beauty is in not knowing.
